About
Our Magic Moss brand is also known as Irish Moss, and most commonly carrageenan, its botanical name is Chondrus crispus. It's mainly been used as a thickener in cosmetic products - its not as well known for its healing and nutritive superfood qualities. Prepared into a food, it is neutral in taste and color. Create it into a paste for use as a thickener and binder in recipes (see instructions and recipes below). Because its so high in minerals, it preserves itself refrigerated for 3 weeks.
It's a regenerative superfood that's not a moss at all - its actually a highly mineralized seaweed! It's found along the rocky coast lines of the Atlantic Ocean, in Jamaica, and ours comes from Indonesia.
History
Old folklore history says that in Ireland it was taken on long journeys as a good luck charm, or placed under a rug to bring abundance or money into the home. It was also used for stuffing mattresses and feeding cows... and in the 19th century when Ireland went through a devastating famine, it was one of the main sources of food and nutrition. In the past years, its become very popular in the rawfood movement as an exciting culinary tool for its thickening and binding (and also creamy) texture - pure magic.
Health Benefits
And according to Wikipedia, its said to "contain 15 of the 18 essential elements that make up the human body. This includes great amounts calcium, iodine, sulphur, and potassium as well as Vitamins A, D, E, F and K. This is why this most amazing seaweed is thought to be able to cure everything from bladder disorders, bronchitis, halitosis (bad breath), intestinal disorders and glandular problems to swollen joints, lung difficulties, thyroid conditions, tuberculosis, tumors, and ulcers. Recent studies have found that Irish moss does in fact have some great anti-viral properties and can help fight the Influenza B and mumps viruses".
It's also known to be affective in healing skin conditions, reducing wrinkles due to its vitamin K content, and its also said to help replenish the body after battling with illness due to it high mineral content which makes it highly alkaline.
Our test lab results show our magic moss brand to be high zinc and lysine - this combination is known to be affective for herpes.
Here's how to prepare it from its original whole form, into a workable paste:
